Chapter Eighteen

It had been a couple of days since our lunch with Millie and Olive, during which time, we shared everything we learned with Avery. It surprised me that we hadn’t heard back from her, and I expected the door to fly open any minute and for her to regale us with whatever she’d found out. But so far—silence.

Pryce and I sat side by side at the big dining table on the balcony, clicking away on our laptops, sifting through the latest that our respective offices had sent over, both of us dealing with business that we hadn’t given our full attention, since we’d gotten caught up in checking out the beach and finding a new restaurant.

I hadn’t told Pryce that donations were down due to all the bad publicity. I’d make sure that none of the charities I supported would suffer, and I was sure it was only temporary. A fundraising dinner was rapidly approaching, and it wouldn’t be good for contributions if I weren’t there to schmooze. I wanted him to be my date but also didn’t want him to feel like he was on display. Since I wasn’t the sneak-around type, I’d tell him about the event and let him decide.

Pryce’s phone rang, and after a quick look at the screen, he answered. He listened intently, scrunching up his nose, and a good minute went by with him saying nothing. “You’re full of it! If you think I’m knuckling under to extortion, you’ve got the wrong man. I suggest you lose my number.” He hung up and immediately placed a call.

What the heck?

“That was an interesting call.” Pryce flashed the screen at me so I’d know he called Grey. After exchanging greetings, he said, “A man just called, claiming to have proof that I didn’t kill Lili.”

Wish I could hear both sides of the conversation.

“Claims to know two people that witnessed Lili’s murder, and for the right price, he’d be willing to give them up.” Pryce laughed grimly. “He also claimed that the reason these people haven’t come forward is they’re afraid to get involved.”

I gasped. They’d let an innocent man go to jail?

Pryce turned to me with a shake of his head, I can’t believe this on his face. “The caller claimed to be willing to part with the information for a mere 100K.”

How could Pryce know it wasn’t a con before shelling out the money?

“Told him that I didn’t do extortion. Then, my anger getting the better of me, I hung up. I’m thinking now I should’ve played the game. The last thing I heard him say was, ‘Think about it.’” Pryce put the phone on speaker so he could scroll through the screen and read off the number. “I’ll wait to hear back.” He hung up and tossed the phone on the table.

I looped my arm around his and pulled him into a side hug.

“The caller was cocky, certain I’d jump at his offer,” he said into the top of my head.

“His parting comment sounds like you haven’t heard the last of him.
